Gardener – Environment & Leisure Team
Location: Telford Street, Newport, NP19 0ES
Contract: 9th June 2025 – 26th October 2025 (20 Weeks)
Hours: 37 hours/week, Monday–Thursday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM (30-minute lunch)
Pay: £12.59/hour (PAYE) or £15.99/hour (Umbrella) + Agency Support Benefits

- Carry out practical horticulture tasks to high standards, including grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, leaf clearing, and planting bedding plants, trees, and shrubs.
- Perform shrub bed maintenance (e.g., pruning, division) and general soft landscaping (e.g., top-soiling, seeding, shrub-bed renewal).
- Operate and maintain vehicles, plant, and machinery (e.g., mowers, strimmers), ensuring compliance with Health & Safety and Road Traffic Regulations.
- Apply chemicals safely and report any defects in tools or equipment to your line manager.
- Support sports facility maintenance, including setting out and marking pitches, as part of the project.
- Prioritise safety, taking care of your own and others’ well-being while working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Skills: Strong practical horticulture skills, with experience in grass cutting, landscaping, and using machinery like mowers and strimmers.
- Qualities: Reliable, punctual, and flexible, with a positive attitude and a willingness to assist colleagues.
- Experience: NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture (or equivalent) OR at least two years’ proven experience in grounds maintenance; knowledge of plant identification and Health & Safety regulations.
- Requirements: Full UK driving licence; ability to work 37 hours/week (Monday–Thursday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM); stamina for physical outdoor work in all conditions; availability for occasional overtime; eligibility to work in the UK.
- Bonus Points: Spraying certificate; ability to interpret plant plans; Welsh language skills (or willingness to learn basic greetings).
