Community Services Operative (Level 2) – Road Sweeper Driver

Are you an experienced HGV driver with a passion for keeping communities clean and safe? Join our team as a Community Services Operative (Level 2) and play a vital role in delivering essential street cleaning, waste, and highways services in Blaenau Gwent. This is a fantastic 12-week temporary opportunity to showcase your skills in a dynamic, community-focused role!

Job Details:

• Employment Type: Temporary (12 weeks, covering long-term sickness)
• Start Date: 22/09/2025
• Hours: 37 hours per week
• Pay Rate: PAYE: £14.84 per hour | Umbrella: £18.89 per hour
• Location: Ebbw Vale

Key Responsibilities:

• Street Cleaning: Operate a mechanical road sweeper (Class 2 vehicle) to cleanse streets, pavements, and back lanes, meeting set schedules and targets. Conduct daily vehicle checks and maintenance (e.g., oil, water, power mechanisms) per the Blaenau Gwent Driver’s Handbook.
• Highways & Drainage: Support kerbing, paving, tarmac works (e.g., pothole repairs), drainage maintenance, and culvert inspections. Operate machinery like gully machines and maintain highway verges (grass cutting, hedge trimming).
• Waste & Recycling: Drive and operate collection vehicles, supervise crew to ensure compliance with health and safety (e.g., PPE), and assist with waste/recycling collection, ensuring quality and no contamination.
• Grounds & Bereavement Services: Maintain sports facilities, cemeteries, and public spaces through grass cutting, weeding, and grave preparation. Ensure safe excavation and liaise with funeral directors and the public.
• Emergency Response: Attend out-of-hours emergencies (e.g., flooding, winter maintenance) and participate in standby/call-out rotas, including Saturday/Bank Holiday work.
• Promote a positive image of the service, maintaining professionalism and excellent customer service.

Requirements:

• Essential: Valid HGV Category C (Class 2) licence and proven experience driving a mechanical road sweeper.
• Essential: Experience with tachograph work and familiarity with highways, waste/recycling, or grounds maintenance.
• Essential: Strong commitment to health and safety, teamwork, and customer service. Ability to handle physical outdoor work and emergency call-outs.
• Must have: Eligibility to work in the UK, CV, Criminal Convictions Declaration, Driving Licence, 3 years of references/work history, and Confidentiality Agreement (upon offer acceptance).
