Rehabilitation Officer Sensory, Manchester City Council
Pay rate to £19.79 per hour 
Contract role
Vitalis are recruiting for experienced Rehabilitation Officer to work in a Sensory Team in Manchester City Council.
A Vision Rehabilitation Specialist plays a critical role in supporting adults with visual impairment to regain independence, safety, and confidence. The core responsibilities include:
  1. Specialist Assessment
  • Carrying out comprehensive, person‑centred assessments of functional vision, mobility, daily living skills, communication needs, and environmental safety.
  • Identifying risks, rehabilitation goals, and the level of support required to meet statutory responsibilities under the Care Act.
  • Working collaboratively with MDT colleagues to ensure a holistic understanding of the individual's needs.
  1. Support Planning
  • Developing tailored rehabilitation plans that focus on mobility, orientation, independent living skills, technology use, communication, and environmental adaptation.
  • Agreeing clear outcomes with the citizen and reviewing progress regularly.
  • Ensuring plans are accessible and appropriate to the individual’s level of vision and communication needs.
  1. Delivering Specialist Training and Interventions
  • Providing structured, evidence‑based training programmes such as:
    • Cane and mobility training
    • Safe orientation routes
    • Daily living skills (cooking, cleaning, self‑care)
    • Assistive technology (screen readers, magnification, smartphone accessibility tools)
  • Adjusting training sessions to support different learning styles and levels of vision.
  1. Contribution to MDT (Multi‑Disciplinary Team) Working
  • Attending MDT meetings to provide expert sensory input and share specialist knowledge.
  • Supporting joint planning with OT, Physio, Social Workers, Health professionals, and external agencies.
  • Ensuring sensory needs are recognised and embedded in wider care and support plans.
  1. Supporting and Advising Apprentice VRS Workers
  • Offering guidance, mentoring, and shadowing opportunities to apprentices during their training pathway.
  • Providing professional oversight to ensure safe progression of skills and competence.
  • Supporting reflective practice, development of caseload management skills, and confidence building.
  • Helping prepare apprentices for qualification and future independent practice.
  1. Service Development Responsibilities
  • Contributing to the growth, quality, and innovation of the Sensory Service, including:
    • Designing and implementing new pathways and interventions.
    • Helping to establish a VI Drop‑In Service for Manchester citizens, including:
      • Creating accessible materials
      • Setting up systems for referrals and triage
      • Providing rapid assessments and advice
      • Linking citizens to wider community resources
    • Supporting induction processes for new staff and ensuring consistent standards.
  1. Ensuring Professional Standards and Continuous Development
  • Completing mandatory and specialist training to maintain professional competency.
  • Staying updated with best practice in visual impairment rehabilitation, mobility training, assistive technology, and safeguarding.
  • Contributing to quality assurance, case audits, and service improvement.
