What you’ll be doing as a Senior Environmental Assurance Specialist:
- Provide environmental technical assurance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead the environmental de-risking of Major Projects and Programmes schemes and ensure appropriate mitigation is followed.
- Produce, procure and sign off on the required environmental deliverables. Typically including regulatory, sustainability and biodiversity requirements.
- Check, review and sign off on environmental deliverables produced by consultants and contractors.
- Carry out site audits and inspections and ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation is maintained.
- Champion the continuous improvement of the Major Projects and Programmes environmental assurance function.
- Work with the wider environmental functions, across the Business, to ensure a joined-up and consistent approach to protecting and enhancing the environment.
- Create a culture where environment and sustainable best practices are embedded within day-to-day activities.
- Drive innovation in both delivery process and sustainable construction methods in partnership with Thames Water's asset and engineering functions.
- Effectively communicate the requirements of current environmental legislation and best practice.
- Work innovatively to identify areas where processes can be improved.
- Manage the activities of multiple disciplines in accordance with project delivery procedures.
- Support external liaison with regulators such as the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, etc.
- Support the Principal Environmental Engineer in team meetings and management activities.
- Lead and support junior team members, ensuring they are engaged, and help develop them as environmental professionals.
Salary for this position is £53,000 - £63,000 per annum
To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need are:
- Be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in an appropriate environmental or sustainability discipline.
- Understand the regulatory environment we work in to achieve compliance with our environmental regulatory requirements.
- Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, to clearly interact with colleagues and stakeholders
- Be a great team player with the ability to lead and work collaboratively with all stakeholders, but also capable of working independently.
- IT literate with an awareness of knowledge management
- Have a desire to adopt and demonstrate behaviours aligned with Thames Water’s values
- Have a passion for continuous professional development and an active approach to driving diversity within Engineering in Thames Water
- Passion for protecting and enhancing the environment.
- Membership of a relevant professional body or demonstrable relevant experience in the environment and sustainability field is desirable.
- Previous work experience in the Utility industry is desirable, but not essential.
- Competitive salary of between £53,000 - £63,000 per annum, depending on previous experience.

- 26 days annual leave per year, increasing to 30 days with the length of service. (Plus bank holidays).
