Job Description

Our client in Northampton is looking for an experienced Closing Operative to join their team.
Monday to Thursday 07:30-16:30 Fridays 07:30-12:30 (30 minute lunch, 10 minute tea break)
Salary is dependent on experience £12.21 - £13

Job Summary:
The Closing Operative is responsible for meticulously assembling and stitching various components of product uppers according to specifications, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and adherence to production targets. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and proficiency with industrial sewing machines and related equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate a variety of industrial sewing machines (e.g., flatbed, post-bed, cylinder arm, puritan) to stitch product upper components, including vamps, quarters, linings, and backstraps.
  • Prepare and align materials, ensuring correct placement, tension, and stitch quality.
  • Perform operations such as skiving, folding, pressing, and cementing as required for specific product designs.
  • Inspect components and finished uppers for defects, ensuring they meet quality standards and specifications.
  • Identify and report any machine malfunctions or quality issues to the supervisor promptly.
  • Maintain a clean and organised workstation, adhering to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Work efficiently to meet daily production targets and deadlines.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and other departments to ensure smooth production flow.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and quality control standards.
  • Participate in training and development activities as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:
  • Proven experience manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in operating various industrial sewing machines
  • Strong understanding of different stitching techniques and materials
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Keen attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety procedures in a manufacturing setting.

Desirable:
  • Formal training or apprenticeship in footwear manufacturing.
  • Experience with different types of footwear construction (e.g., Goodyear welt, Blake stitch, cemented).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings or patterns.
  • Problem-solving skills related to machine operation or material handling.

Working Conditions:
  • Primarily based in a manufacturing/factory environment.
  • May involve prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
  • Exposure to noise from machinery (appropriate PPE will be provided).
  • Requirement to handle various materials, including leather, synthetics, and adhesives.
