Job Description

2D CAD Design Engineer
Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 per annum (Based on experience)
Hours: Monday to Friday - Days
Location: Dudley, West Midlands


Job Purpose:

To take the initial specifications for sheet steelwork and copper busbars and generate all necessary production drawings, instructions, specifications, punch press programs, and other documentation required to manufacture the complete product(s).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Liaise with customers and sales representatives to ensure full clarity on engineering and specification requirements.
  • Generate, quality check, and release all design information, production methods, punch press programs, processes, and finishes to support accurate and timely manufacturing.
  • Design & CAD/CAM
  • Operate and improve proficiency with CAD/CAM systems (AutoCAD and Radan).
  • Maintain security, accuracy, and organization of CAD records to support efficient order release.
  • Review and update automated system standards to reflect best practices and latest innovations.
  • Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure “right first time” quality through thorough checking of personal and peer work.
  • Assist production teams in developing and maintaining quality control tools (e.g., check sheets).
  • Provide inspection support during critical production stages to reduce quality-related waste.
  • Identify and resolve design/specification issues promptly, documenting any manufacturing concessions where necessary.
  • Production Support
  • Optimise material usage and reduce welding requirements where practical.
  • Define and improve production processes; contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay informed about tooling, materials, and manufacturing innovations to enhance quality and efficiency.
  • Cost Control & Value Engineering
  • Support decisions on in-house production vs. outsourcing (“make or buy”).
  • Apply value engineering principles to reduce cost and improve production outcomes.
  • Mentorship & Standards
  • Contribute to the training and development of junior staff.
  • Maintain and apply relevant design standards and professional engineering practices.
  • Take responsibility for specific improvement programmes, such as standardisation efforts.

Skills, Training and Knowledge Required
Essential Skills & Experience Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills
  • HND or Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (2D) and Radan (2D)
  • Experience in design for manufacture (DFM)
  • Team player with the ability to work cross-functionally
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
